If you thought that everything in music, these days, seems to be
manufactured and the music scene is no
longer about creativity and talent - musicians making and performing their own
music – then take a look at what is on offer on locally. Blistering high-energy performer Bap from
Triggerman ‘the first time I heard a guitar turned up really loud I thought
I want to play one of them all the time’, veterans of the NI music scene,
The Debonaires, tipped to be the next band from the province that ‘makes it’

experience and advice in getting to that all important shot at a record deal. ‘There
are some bands who get lucky breaks but making these first steps into what is a
highly competitive industry even at the stage of getting local gig’s,
explains Ross Graham of NIMIC. Attitude is important and all the music promoters
agree. ‘There are a lot of people out there with No 1 records who have got a
fantastic attitude, great application’. There are helpful tips from Dave
Neely (Spring and Airbrake, Limelight, Katy Daly’s, Auntie Annies), Paul McKay@gifted (The
Empire), Music Industry adviser, Richard Abbott and James Loveday and Jennifer
Turtle of the Distortion Project, now in its fifth year of putting on

The Insider “Secret History”
Produced &
Presented by Peter Bleakley of the Shankill Mirror
A visit to Fernhill House Museum, the People’s Museum, with (Curator) Bob Foster. Opened officially in July 1996, the museum depicts the social, industrial and labour history of the greater Shankill, the tradition of military service and aspects of cultural identity. The museum offers a search facility for those wishing to trace relatives who died in either of the two World Wars.
The museum is situated
in Fernhill House, which was once owned by the Cunningham family. It is
situated beside the Glencairn estate, one of the most deprived areas in Belfast
and known for its high unemployment rate. There are few recognisable resources
in the area and the needs of the community are great and varied. As a step towards economic regeneration, a
community museum was established at Fernhill House by the Glencairn People’s
Project providing local jobs for local people, and educational and recreational
opportunities for the children and young adults both from the local area and
further afield. Those members of the public wishing to support the museum
financially or donate artefacts for future exhibition may become "Friends

An evening from Albuquerque
Flicks on 66 Wild West Digital
Shootout (70 minutes)
Flicks On 66
is no ordinary film festival, in fact it has been called "the world's
strangest little film festival”. It’s a hands-on, frantic week which uses local
acting and film producing talent, as well as help from real-life Hollywood
mentors as each contestant shoots and edits their 11 minute film in five
days. "We bill ourselves as the
world's only digital film-making festival, which means that instead of watching
other peoples' movies, we bring people to Albuquerque for a week and they
shoot, edit and premier their short films in a week," says Chairperson
Tony DellaFlora, who also works as a reporter for the Albuquerque Journal.
"This is a different kind of film festival. We see it as marketing for the
film industry in New Mexico. We are finding people and getting movies made”. "This gives people a good grounding and
a good idea of what the business is all about. This is a grassroots
effort."
Flicks is
financially supported by Albuquerque businesses. The festival provides digital
equipment, cast, crew, mentors and other resources to help the filmmakers bring
their vision to the screen. On Sunday
morning, the filmmakers and their crews are set loose in Albuquerque. They have
until mid-day Wednesday to complete their filming. Then they have from noon
Wednesday until noon Saturday to edit and complete their films and turn them
into Flicks' judges. The short pieces are aired Saturday night.
Short films

Produced &
Directed by Martin Nelson
High summer it wasn’t but
there certainly was a Big Buzz at the Tullyglass House Hotel on 26th
February last for the Parents & Professionals Autism Gala Ball. It was
stars, strawberries and double cream all the way as a cornucopia of fantasy,
fun and entertainment rolled down the red carpet in profusion.
A princely sum of £5,000 was raised for this very worthy charity hosted by the
ebullient Robin Elliott sporting a Caribbean style grade one golden tan just
like television’s natty pinstriped David Dickinson. Those spray-on tans are
powerful boy, ‘some handlin’ as the Ballymena people would say.
Frenetic bidding ensued for memorable items such as Philomena Begley’s
autographed blanket, David Beckham’s signed and framed football shirt, or you
could have gone home with a framed ‘Lemony Snicket’ film cell! Whatever that
is…
The vegetable broth, roast Antrim turkey and ham and trio of sweets were indeed
a present from heaven as was the evening’s entertainment. Also on the menu was
the company of Coronation Street stars Trevor Dwyer-Lynch and Thomas Craig who
incidentally sings beautifully. Both interviewed well before the golden
corkscrew was unveiled…
For the younger fans, former Boyzone bad boy Shane Lynch gave Robin Elliott
some intriguing insights into his life while on the flipside, Citybeat legend
Joe Ferguson let us have a tiny peep at the real Joe, warts an’ all, as Robin
slowly applied the NvTv thumbscrews over a midnight coffee. Video certainly has
not killed this radio star…
A big thank you to Big Buzz magazine - and to editor Barry O Kane - which has
hosted Ireland’s top talent over the past 13 years and which supported this
very worthy charity.

My Secret
Garden (35 minutes)
A portrait of
the artist, Liam Breandán de Frinse.
Liam begins by reminiscing about his apprenticeship in Harland and Wolf
before deciding to become a full time artist. Realising he was ‘was born to be
an artist’ he attended classes under the influential John Luke, the well known
Belfast artist. The film integrates Liam’s video diary revealing his
frustrations and inner thoughts as he frantically works towards the deadline to
complete his work for a one-man exhibition in the Tom Caldwell gallery.
Liam recently learnt that he was adopted and so began his journey for his
biological father and mother, his brothers and sisters, all now living in
Australia, to understand whom he was. The film is dedicated to Marion de
Frinse, Liam’s lifetime partner who died. Marion’s death permeated Liam’s paintings
from his last exhibition; some consider it was his best work. The work helped
Liam through a painful grieving process and this latest exhibition celebrates
the wild and exotic flowers that grow in the garden that he and Marion loved to
gaze at from their kitchen.
The film concluded with Liam’s work being considered by writer and art critic
Ian Hill, gallery owner Chris Caldwell and musician and arts worker, Brendan
Pobblestone.
Liam Breandán de Frinse is one of Irelands most accomplished multimedia artists,
distinguished principally as a painter, but also well-known as an installation
artist and sculptor. In addition he is a performance poet and writer, and has
been involved with television and art films
